Humanity Centred Software (HCS) Lab

The Humanity Centred Software (HCS, pronounced like “hicks”) lab offers a dedicated environment for students with a passion for software engineering and creativity to delve into technology-driven solutions that contribute to the achievement of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Presently, my focus lies on investigating solutions that align with SDG 3, which pertains to good health and well-being, as well as SDG 4, emphasizing quality education.

Nevertheless, I am enthusiastic about collaborating with both students and industry partners on projects linked to any of the SDGs. This collaboration would revolve around the iterative design and development of technological solutions in alignment with various SDGs.

If you are interested in participating and/or collaborating with me and my current research students, feel free to contact me (NOTE: if you are a prospective under/graduate student, research participation *may* be subject to available funding)

Below I outline some of my ongoing initiatives that specifically target key focus areas of the UN SDGs.

SDG 3: Good health & well-being

Focus on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages by, in part, exploring the creation of virtual home care communities to better aid home care administrators, providers, patients, patient families, and healthcare decision-makers

SDG 4: Quality education

Focus on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all by, in part, exploring the creation of “serious play” learning activities where communities can learn skills and grow knowledge in fun and highly accessible ways. I’m currently exploring Lego-based, physical board game-based, and mobile and augmented reality-based educational and learning experiences
