Projects with students & industry

Here, I’ve outlined several collaborative projects that I’ve orchestrated, involving students from my courses and industry collaborators. Notably, many of the projects listed have resulted in the employment of individual students following their completion of the course. These projects have effectively bridged the gap between classroom-based explorations and tangible real-world applications.

CEEA’s Humanities and Engineering SIG

My students and I partnered with Chantal Rodier (University of Ottawa), Deborah Tihanyi (University of Toronto), and Lydia Wilkinson (University of Toronto); Members of the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA) “Humanities and Engineering” Special Interest Group (SIG), for a collaborative project. In my Usability Research and Engineering course, students delved into creating a community of practice/digital community habitat for the SIG

DFG-SK & NVSSN

My students and I partnered with Scott Wells from Data for Good Saskatchewan (DFG-SK) and Colleen Strauch from Luther College’s Non-profit and Voluntary Studies Network (NVSSN) for a collaborative project. In my People-Centered Design course, students delved into creating an interactive data visualization tool focused on Regina’s local initiatives toward the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SKCDA

My students and I teamed up with Charlene McLean and Colleen Strauch from the Saskatchewan Career Development Association (SKCDA) to collaborate on a project. In my People Centred Design course, students delved into designing solutions for a new SKCDA website.

Fun fact: Once the course concluded, a student from the class was hired by the SKCDA to bring the website to life and make it operational.

SSCF

My student and I teamed up with Victor Roman from the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation (SSCF) to work on a project. In my People Centred Design course, students engaged in designing solutions for a dynamic local project or initiative website.

Fun fact: When the course came to an end, the SSCF brought on board a student from the class to put the website into action and make it functional.

Regina Mandolin Orchestra

My students and I collaborated with Ken McCaw, Monique Beauregard, Natalia Osypenko, Charles-Henri Warren, and Ed Rodger from the Regina Mandolin Orchestra on a project. In my People Centred Design course, students delved into designing solutions for a fresh online system to enhance collaboration among orchestra members.

Regina Food Bank

My students and I teamed up with John Bailey, the CEO of the Regina Food Bank onm a project. Students in my People-Centred Design course ventured into designing solutions for an online and mobile system aimed at streamlining food bank orders, pickups, and deliveries.

IABC, Regina

My students and I teamed up with Jennifer Arends, Trilby Henderson, and Joanne Kozlowski from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), Regina branch, for a collaborative project. In my People-Centred Design course, students undertook the task of crafting a fresh website experience for this local non-profit organization.

Fun fact: With support from the IABC, Regina branch, a student from the class was recruited to bring the website to life and make it functional.

Regina Fire & Protective Services

In partnership with Candace Giblett from Regina Fire & Protective Services, students in my People-Centred Design course embarked on a project. Their objective was to design and create a mobile application aimed at educating children and parents about fire safety at home. The app boasted interactive features like a 911 simulator and a module for children to learn their home address.

Fun fact: Thanks to funding secured from the University of Regina Faculty of Arts (Community Engagement and Research Centre), both the Regina Fire Department and I were able to hire a student from my course. This student played a pivotal role in refining the app’s design and development, and also collaborated with the City of Regina’s Information Technology Support team to make the project operational.

RCE Saskatchewan

Teaming up with Jill Forrester and Carissa Robb from Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Saskatchewan’s Regional Facilitation Group, students in my Usability Engineering & Research course engaged in enhancing RCE Saskatchewan’s website design through iterative processes.

Fun fact: By obtaining funding from the University of Regina Faculty of Engineering, we successfully brought a software systems engineering student on board. This student played a key role in refining and developing the RCE Saskatchewan website.

University of Regina Faculty of Engineering

In partnership with Gina MacPherson and Dave deMontingy from the University of Regina Faculty of Engineering, students enrolled in my Designing Apps for Collaboration & Learning course embarked on a collaborative effort. Their objective was to collaborate with crucial Faculty administrators to design and develop a software tool. This tool was aimed at aiding Engineering educators in collecting vital course data, contributing to the facilitation of Engineering accreditation through an Outcomes-Based Assessment system.

Fun fact: With support from the Faculty of Engineering, a software systems engineering student was recruited to bring the website to life and make it functional.

eHealth Saskatchewan

Partnering with Janice Reeves from eHealth Saskatchewan, students in my Designing Apps for Collaboration & Learning course engaged in a collaborative project. Their focus was on designing and developing a software system aimed at facilitating the sharing of ideas. This system was intended for use within eHealth Saskatchewan, serving both internal and external purposes for the continuous improvement of ideas.
